The Intrepid

As many of you know, I recently spent a few days in New York city with my old roommate. For the most part, we just did stuff that we did there last summer for old-times sake, but we did do one thing that stood out from the rest as being an all new experience. A friend told us about this museum that is actually an old aircraft carrier, and we had some time to kill, so we went. As it turns out, the place is known as the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum. We flashed our old college IDs to get the discount and paid the $10 to get in. Then came the metal detectors. I kept setting the damn thing off. Finally, I found my sunglasses case in one of my many pockets and we were off.
The first thing I did was play some game that was kind of like the old Nintendo version of Top Gun. Remember the part where you have to land your plane on the aircraft carrier? It was pretty dumb, but I did it a couple times until I got it right. Then we pretty much walked around looking at helicopters and fighter planes for a couple of hours. They must have 25 of them up on the deck of the carrier. It was pretty neat to walk around reading a little about each one. We also got to check out the navigation room and all that crap.
After we were done in the carrier, we checked out the destroyer Edson, which is also part of the museum. It wasn’t all that impressive because they just allowed you on the deck. You couldn’t go inside the thing. Oh well.
Finally, we went on the tour of the SSG Growler. It’s an old submarine that happens to be the only submarine capable of firing nuclear weapons that is on display to the public. It was cramped, but a neat tour. Apparently, the space was so cramped that they put a layer of canned food on the floor, and the crew had to walk over it. I guess that’s actually how they stored 2/3 of their food.
So anyway, if you’re in New York and want to kill some time, check out the Intrepid. It makes for a good afternoon, if you’re interested in that sort of thing.
