Pop Music?

Well, Parsley is not the only one who would have expressed misgivings about this project of LobaGirl’s. Had I heard about it before reading about it, I would have had a few things to say as well.
I’ll admit, that I used to listen to top-40 radio once upon a time, but I had an excuse; I didn’t really listen to much music until around 1992 or so, when I was in the 8th grade. Once I got my bearings, I turned to the music of previous generations for solace since the music of the day was so ho-hum. I’ll admit that Pearl Jam has had one or two good songs, but should Eddie really have been on the cover of Time magazine for countless wannabe groupies to tear off and hang any place they could fit it? For the next decade or two?
As for some of the other bands of the time, STP and Live deserve some mention, but their latest offerings are pretty questionable. They put out a few good albums, but their music soon lost the edge that made it so good once these bands realized how popular they were. They have become soft, and have lost a lot of fans in the process. I own the first four Live albums. Is there a fifth? I don’t know, and I don’t particularly care because the fourth one wasn’t really that good. Like I said, it just lacked the drive that can be seen in their first 3 records. Some of the songs are decent, but they just aren’t Live, at least that’s my opinion.
Anyway, let’s get back to what I listened to, and still do, quite a bit of the time, anyway. Pink Floyd, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan. There are others, of course, but I don’t want to list too many because, well, I don’t feel like it. These bands were around when rock and roll was cutting its teeth. They went through it all, sex, drugs, and rock and roll, as they say.
As for today’s music, some of it is pretty bad, some of it isn’t so bad. My favorite type of radio station is a rock station, not a classic rock station, not a modern rock station, a rock station. The best ones span the years. They play the likes of the Beatles, Who, and Stones alongside more modern groups such as Live, Nirvana, STP, and groups that are producing ok music today. They provide the necessary doses of classic rock, but expose the listener to bands on the forefront of the rock scene today.
As for the pop scene today, we can all agree that it’s pretty bad. Tom Petty makes his feelings known in his new album The Last DJ, and he doesn’t do a bad job of showing how empty acts like Britney Spears, N’Sync, and the Backstreet Boys are. It’s too bad that they are such a hit among the impressionable youth of today. But as you might realize, I’d say that giving them a list of pop bands from the 90s just won’t cut it. You can leave out the 80s for the most part, but I’d have to include the great rock albums of the 60s and 70s in my list.
Just so you know, I don’t want you to send me any lists. You can if you really want, but I won’t do much with them, other than snicker at them if I dislike them or nod if I agree. Feel free to contact me if you have something to say.
